Boeing wins Navy contract for sixth-generation F/A-XX fighter
F/A-XX: Boeing wins Navy’s sixth-gen fighter to boost air superiority See how the $20B program will shape carrier warfare and future air combat
The U.S. Navy has selected Boeing to develop the F/AXX, a sixthgeneration carrierbased fighter expected to support future air combat and work alongside manned and unmanned aircraft.
The contract is worth more than $20 billion for fullscale development, according to the Department of War. Officials said the aircraft is part of the Next Generation Air Dominance program and is intended to extend the Navy’s operational reach, improve mission systems, and strengthen air superiority.
Boeing said the program will be built in parallel with its other sixthgeneration fighter work for the Air Force. The company is also expanding a secure manufacturing facility in St. Louis as it prepares for production. The Navy expects the F/AXX to begin augmenting and eventually replacing older F/A18E/F Super Hornets and EA18G Growlers in the 2030s.
