Carney rallies Liberal MPs ahead of Parliament's return

Mark Carney government aims to lower costs, boost sovereignty, and move fast on project reviews, social media rules, AI, and a new fall budget.

Prime Minister Mark Carney told Liberal MPs on Friday that his government is focused on lowering costs for Canadians, strengthening sovereignty, and preparing for a demanding fall sitting of Parliament. Speaking to the caucus in Ottawa ahead of the House of Commons resuming next week, Carney said several major initiatives are still early in development but will move forward this session. He welcomed three new MPs who won August byelections and said the government will introduce legislation this fall to speed up project reviews under a proposed Building Canada Strong Act. Carney also said the government plans to advance new rules on social media and artificial intelligence, citing concerns about online harms to children. He added that a new budget is expected later this fall, with the government aiming to manage spending while considering further support for social programs and child care.
