Carney unveils Canada’s national AI strategy

Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled Canada’s longawaited artificial intelligence strategy in Toronto on Thursday, saying it is meant to prioritize safety, reliability and national sovereignty as AI spreads through more parts of the economy. The plan includes free AI literacy training, support for young workers, a national supercomputer, expanded compute access, and new funding for AIrelated programs. Ottawa says the strategy could help create jobs, increase business adoption of AI, and strengthen Canadian companies and infrastructure. The government also says it will take steps to reduce AI risks, including work on privacy rules, online safety, watermarking AIgenerated content and election protection. However, the strategy offers few firm details on some measures, and opposition parties and labour groups have criticized it for not doing enough to protect workers.
