Crews clean up second spill in Scarborough creek linked to subway extension work
Scarborough spill cleanup continues after West Highland Creek sewer release tied to subway work See what officials say about water quality, impacts and the ongoing investigation
City and provincial crews have finished cleaning up a second spill in Scarborough's West Highland Creek that was tied to construction for the Scarborough subway extension.
Ontario's Spills Action Centre received a report on Thursday about material entering the creek through the sewer system. The provincial environment ministry said the spill came from a construction site run by Scarborough Transit Connect, the Metrolinx contractor building the project.
Officials said the spilled material was nontoxic and there were no observed impacts on fish or other aquatic life. Water quality testing and followup inspections are continuing, while the cause of the spill remains under investigation. A similar incident in the same area happened in July.
