Zoox to begin paid robotaxi rides in Las Vegas on Aug. 10

Amazonowned Zoox will start charging fares for robotaxi rides in Las Vegas on Aug. 10, its first commercial launch after offering free service in parts of Las Vegas and San Francisco over the past year. The company said the move follows a temporary federal exemption that allows it to operate without human controls, clearing the way to begin paid trips. Zoox is aiming to scale its service and compete with Waymo and ridehailing companies. Zoox uses purposebuilt autonomous shuttles with no steering wheel or pedals, designed to carry up to four passengers in an inwardfacing cabin. The company said fares will be based on a starting price plus distance and time, with possible extra fees for certain trips such as airport rides. Zoox did not disclose its base fare, but said it plans to price its service at a level comparable to premium ridehailing options.
