Heavy rain floods Montreal homes and causes outages

Montreal flooding and power outages hit thousands after intense weekend rain See which neighbourhoods were hardest hit and what officials are doing now

Heavy rain hit Montreal on Saturday, leaving thousands of people without power and flooding basements in several neighbourhoods. Environment Canada said parts of the city’s West Island and South Shore received 100 to 150 millimetres of rain in just a few hours. In PierrefondsRoxboro, Mayor Jim Beis said the total may have been even higher, with several hundred homes severely flooded and roads closed in nearby areas. HydroQuebec said about 4,500 addresses were still affected by outages Sunday morning. In SaintConstant, southwest of Montreal, officials declared a local state of emergency before lifting it later in the day. Fire crews in Montreal received hundreds of calls and carried out some boat rescues, while officials said they were focusing on safety and electrical hazards.
