Carney set to launch fundraiser and design contest for 24 Sussex restoration

Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce a plan on Friday to restore 24 Sussex Drive, Canada’s official residence for prime ministers, according to a government source. The proposal is expected to include a national fundraising campaign through the Rideau Hall Foundation, along with a design competition for Canadian companies to propose and complete the renovation work. An independent advisory panel is also expected to review the submissions. The building has been empty for years after being cleared of asbestos, mould and rodents. The government has been under pressure to decide whether to repair 24 Sussex, replace it, or move the prime minister’s residence elsewhere. A final design choice is expected by July 1, 2027.
