Support awaits B.C. wildfire evacuees in Vernon

People displaced by wildfires around Okanagan Lake in British Columbia are finding emergency support at the Salvation Army in Vernon, where the charity has become a gathering place for evacuees trying to figure out their next steps. According to Salvation Army spokesperson Ron Cartmell, local businesses have been helping since the centre opened on Friday, delivering supplies such as bottled water, hamburgers and coffee. Cartmell said the community is trying to ease the stress and trauma many evacuees are facing, including some who have now been forced out by wildfires for the third time in seven years. Strong winds and a prolonged drought helped fires spread quickly over the weekend, and by late Monday about 120 fires were burning across British Columbia, with roughly 50 still out of control.
