The City of Mercier on Montreal’s South Shore is asking the Quebec government to act on longrunning traffic problems on Route 138, especially along StJeanBaptiste Boulevard. The municipality is launching a petition and seeking commitments from provincial election candidates ahead of the fall vote.
City officials say rushhour traffic regularly causes major delays, with some drivers taking 20 to 25 minutes to travel just three kilometres. They want shortterm fixes such as better synchronized traffic lights and a new signal on Boulevard Salaberry, along with longerterm changes to improve traffic flow.
Mercier is also asking Quebec to take over full ownership of SteMarguerite Boulevard, arguing that the province should handle maintenance costs for the road. Residents and local businesses say congestion is affecting daily life, safety, and the city’s appeal as the region continues to grow.
