Diver injured in great white shark attack off Quebec's Gaspé coast
Great white shark attack in Percé, Quebec sends diver to hospital after bite Emergency crews acted fast; see what happened as shark sightings rise in Gaspé
A diver was taken to hospital after being injured by a great white shark in Percé, Quebec, in the Gaspé region on Wednesday morning. Officials said emergency crews responded quickly, and the person’s injuries were not considered lifethreatening.
The Canadian Coast Guard said the incident happened shortly before 10:30 a.m., and the diver was aboard the Yoda, a Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary dive boat. A nearby boat captain said the diver was brought ashore by dinghy before being handed over to paramedics.
The diving company involved said it was suspending operations for the rest of the season and thanked those who helped with the rescue. The attack comes as great white shark sightings have increased this summer in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and around the Gaspé Peninsula, where scientists say the sharks are becoming more regularly observed.
