Toronto police investigate suspected arson after restaurant fire

Toronto police are investigating an early morning fire at a midtown restaurant near Eglinton Avenue West and Bathurst Street as suspected arson. Emergency crews were called to the scene around 2:43 a.m. on Wednesday after reports of an explosion and fire. Toronto Fire said smoke was coming from the back of the building when crews arrived, and the blaze was quickly put out in the basement, where it is believed to have started. No injuries were reported. Paramedics assessed four people at the scene, but no one needed to go to hospital. Officials said two nearby buildings were also damaged, and eight residents who live in the building were temporarily displaced but have somewhere to stay. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
