Severe thunderstorm watch and tornado risk issued for southern Quebec

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the island of Montreal and much of southern and western Quebec as hot, humid conditions raise the chance of strong winds, hail and heavy rain on Tuesday. Officials also issued an orange tornado watch for part of southcentral Quebec, saying any severe thunderstorm can create conditions for a tornado. Meteorologist Jim Prime said people should seek shelter in a secure basement if a tornado develops and avoid going outside to watch it. Montreal residents may also notice a yellowish sky, which Prime said can happen when wildfire smoke accumulates as air masses move across the region. Heat warnings remain in effect in several provinces, and officials are urging people to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity and check on vulnerable neighbors.
