Canadian NATO intern in Belgium faces spying charges

A Canadian woman who interned at NATO’s military headquarters in Belgium has been arrested and charged with spying, according to Belgian prosecutors. Authorities said she is suspected of spying for a third country and of involvement in a criminal organization. The prosecutor’s office did not identify the woman, the country she is alleged to have worked for, or the organization involved. The woman had been working at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, or SHAPE, in Mons. Investigators searched both her home and workplace, and she was arrested on Friday. SHAPE said there was no sign that its operations, command structure, or daytoday tasks were affected. Public Safety Canada said it could not comment on the case while the investigation continues, but noted that Canadian law enforcement and intelligence agencies work closely with partner agencies on threatrelated matters.
