Vancouver considers bringing back Granville Street pedestrian zone next summer
Granville Street pedestrian zone drove downtown energy and helped local businesses See why Vancouver plans to review the summer pilot and consider another return
Vancouver is wrapping up its Granville Street pedestrian zone after Labour Day, but city officials and local businesses are already discussing a return next summer.
The fiveblock closure, which ran from Georgia to Davie, began as part of FIFA World Cuprelated fan activities and was later extended through Labour Day after city council approved nearly $4.75 million for the summer pilot.
Coun. Lisa Dominato said the initiative drew strong public interest and should be reviewed along with survey results, but she said the city hopes to keep building on the momentum. Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association CEO Jane Talbot said the program helped support businesses on a street where many storefronts remain empty, while former city planner Brent Toderian described the project as evidence that a more walkable Granville Street can work beyond major events.
