A Kelowna cyclist has set a new women’s record at the Tour Divide, a 4,400kilometre offroad bike race that runs from Banff, Alta., to Antelope Wells, N.M.
Meaghan Hackinen completed the route in 14 days, 10 hours and two minutes, finishing on Friday afternoon and placing eighth overall. Her time beat the previous women’s mark by more than a day.
The selfsupported race takes riders through mountain trails, forest roads, gravel, and pavement across the Continental Divide. Hackinen faced freezing temperatures, heat, mud, wind, and long stretches between towns while riding roughly 18 hours a day. Fans followed her progress online through GPS tracking during the event.
