Democrats question IRS chief Frank Bisignano’s testimony on staffing
IRS staffing concerns raise questions about Frank Bisignano’s testimony and hiring pushes, with lawmakers citing reports of shortages and possible congressional missteps
Senate Democrats led by Elizabeth Warren have accused IRS chief Frank Bisignano of possibly misleading Congress about staffing levels at the tax agency. In a letter sent Wednesday and shared with CNBC, they said his testimony in March and April did not match recent reporting about a hiring push at the IRS.
The lawmakers pointed to an internal memo cited by NOTUS and to findings from the IRS inspector general, both of which described staffing shortages and operational risks. They said the agency appeared to be seeking expedited hiring authority while Bisignano had told lawmakers there was no staffing shortage.
Bisignano, who also leads the Social Security Administration, has recently faced other scrutiny, including a Wall Street Journal report that he denied. The IRS did not immediately comment on the letter.
