Ontario invests $55.8M in York medical school to train more family doctors

Ontario is putting $55.8 million into planning and operations for York University’s new school of medicine, with the goal of increasing the number of family doctors trained in the province. The school is scheduled to take its first class in 2028 and will be Ontario’s first medical school focused specifically on family medicine. The funding will cover accreditation, curriculum development, faculty hiring, a medical library, training costs and other operating needs for undergraduate and postgraduate programs. At full capacity, York’s program is expected to expand to 240 undergraduate seats and 293 postgraduate seats. The announcement comes as Ontario faces a shortage of family doctors, with the province also adding new medical school seats, residency positions and a grant program for graduates who commit to practicing family medicine in Ontario.
