Anthropic Restarts Fable 5 After Export Controls Are Lifted

Anthropic has restored access to Fable 5 after the U.S. Commerce Department lifted export controls that had taken the model offline for nearly three weeks. The model is now available again across Claude tiers and platforms, but with tighter safety filters and limits on paid usage. The company said the updated safeguards are designed to block a cybersecurityrelated issue that researchers had exposed by pushing past the model’s guardrails. Anthropic said the new filter blocks the problem more than 99% of the time, and when a request is flagged, users will see a notice and a fallback response from Opus 4.8. Anthropic also said future frontier model launches will include prerelease access for the U.S. government, reflecting a new oversight arrangement tied to the model’s return. While the company expects most coding work to remain unaffected, it warned that the stricter filter could also flag some harmless debugging and softwaredevelopment requests.
