California Governor Gavin Newsom accused U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday of ordering the Justice Department to investigate him and his wife in what he described as a politically motivated move.
In a video posted on X, Newsom said federal agents had recently contacted family friends and former employees, seeking records and reviewing older documents. He argued the inquiry was aimed at finding a crime rather than responding to one.
Newsom also said Trump was targeting him because he may run for president. The White House and Justice Department did not immediately respond. The two have frequently clashed over issues including climate policy, pipelines and Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to California last year.
