Two young adults pulled from Montreal's Lachine Canal
Montreal canal rescue leaves two in critical condition after late-night emergency Sonar helped crews find them—see what happened and why water-safety calls are growing
Two people were hospitalized in critical condition after a latenight rescue in Montreal's Lachine Canal on Saturday.
According to the Montreal fire department, one person fell into the water and another entered the canal while trying to help. Emergency crews were called shortly before midnight and searched the area near RenéLévesque Park with help from the Canadian Coast Guard.
Fire officials said sonar equipment was used to locate the pair. Urgencessanté said six paramedics responded, treated both patients at the scene, and transported them to hospital. Both were in their early 20s, and officials said there was no immediate update on their condition.
The incident comes as Quebec water safety advocates are urging stronger drowning prevention measures, including more funding for school swimming programs and broader lifejacket use.
