U.S. tourist dies in accident at Banff’s Johnston Canyon
Johnston Canyon death: RCMP say an American man drowned in Banff National Park Officials urge caution near spring runoff and explain why recovery efforts continue
RCMP say a 25yearold American man died in Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park after an incident that police are treating as an accidental death during a recreational activity.
Police say the man crossed barriers and entered the pools several times before jumping from a height on a third attempt. He briefly surfaced, appeared to be in trouble, and then went back under the water.
Recovery efforts are continuing, but Parks Canada has not been able to deploy divers because of the dangerous terrain. Officials say cameras are being used instead, while strong spring runoff is making underwater visibility difficult. Parks Canada says the Johnston Canyon area remains closed until further notice.
RCMP say the man was visiting Alberta with friends from Pennsylvania, and his relatives are in contact with police. Officials are urging visitors to use extreme caution around moving water, especially during spring melt.
