Fire crews build containment lines near Kimberley, B.C.

Firefighters in southeastern British Columbia are building containment lines to keep an outofcontrol wildfire from reaching Kimberley, a city of more than 8,000 people. The BC Wildfire Service said heavy equipment is being used to create barriers about 10 kilometres west of the community, where residents have been told to prepare for a possible evacuation. The fire has been burning in steep terrain, which has made direct suppression efforts difficult. It has grown to about six square kilometres since it was first detected on Saturday. The province is also dealing with dozens of other active wildfires, with warming and drying weather expected to increase the risk of new fires.
