Carney outlines public donor rules for 24 Sussex restoration

Prime Minister Mark Carney says the fundraising campaign for restoring 24 Sussex Drive will have donation limits and a public donor list to support transparency. The Rideau Hall Foundation will run the campaign, and Carney said the final cap on contributions will be set by the foundation. The government did not give a cost estimate for the project. Carney said the figure will depend on the design work and the outcome of the competition, which is open to eligible Canadian firms and will be overseen by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. 24 Sussex, the official residence of Canada’s prime minister in Ottawa, has been vacant for years and needs major repairs after being stripped for removal of mould, asbestos and rodents. Carney said the goal is to restore it as a secure, accessible and sustainable residence for future prime ministers, with the winning design expected by Canada Day 2027.
