Shippers say stricter U.S. border enforcement is raising costs
U.S. border enforcement delays cross-border cargo and raises costs for Canadian firms See how stricter customs checks affect paperwork, inspections, and trade compliance
Canadian transport and customs firms say U.S. border enforcement has become much stricter under the Trump administration, increasing paperwork, delays, and costs for crossborder cargo.
Industry representatives told CBC that customs officials are asking for more documentation to verify product classifications and trade agreement compliance, with some companies facing deeper inspections far more often than in past years. They said the added scrutiny is making it more expensive to move goods and, in some cases, discouraging trade.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it adjusts its enforcement based on risk and trade trends, and that importers are responsible for providing complete and accurate information.
