Gordie Howe bridge opens with faster freight flow, but prices may not fall soon

The Gordie Howe International Bridge has opened between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, giving truckers a more direct route across the border and a faster way to move goods between Canada and the United States. Trucking groups say the new span should reduce delays, improve security processing, and lower operating costs thanks to shorter travel times and cheaper tolls. Industry representatives estimate large fleets could save significant amounts each month, while federal officials say the bridge could save commercial carriers hundreds of thousands of hours a year. Even so, truckers say shoppers should not expect immediate relief at the checkout. High diesel prices, tariffs, and other cost pressures have kept freight costs elevated, so any savings from the new crossing are more likely to help company margins in the short term than lower consumer prices right away.
