Timeline of key events in the Kenneth Law case
Kenneth Law sentencing starts in Ontario after guilty pleas in assisted suicide case See the key legal developments, plea deal and what happens next in court
Kenneth Law, an Ontario man who admitted to helping people die by suicide through products sold online, is scheduled to begin sentencing proceedings in Newmarket, Ontario. He has pleaded guilty to 14 counts of assisting suicide, while earlier murder charges were later dropped as part of a plea agreement.
The case began drawing attention in 2022 and 2023 as police in Canada and overseas linked deaths to websites associated with Law. Investigators say the sites sold sodium nitrite and other items that could be used for selfharm, and authorities in several provinces later coordinated investigations into the deaths.
The timeline also includes legal developments in 2024 and 2025, including court proceedings, a Supreme Court of Canada decision that did not settle the broader legal question, and delays to Law’s trial. In 2026, prosecutors reached a plea deal and Law entered guilty pleas before the sentencing hearing was set to begin on Sept. 23, 2026.
