Canada ocean envoy Diana Fox Carney advances conservation, climate and security See how Halifax’s Our Ocean Conference could shape Canada’s marine goals

Diana Fox Carney, the wife of Prime Minister Mark Carney, has been appointed Canada’s first ocean envoy in a new unpaid role focused on ocean conservation. According to a government release, her mandate is to help advance Canada’s work on ocean conservation by linking it with climate action, maritime security, economic resilience and Indigenous leadership. She will also chair the 12th annual Our Ocean Conference, which Canada will host in Halifax next year. The event will bring together governments, researchers and organizations to discuss ocean protection and related policy goals. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said the conference will help Canada highlight its work on sustainable fisheries, ocean science and stewardship as the country continues toward its goal of protecting 30 per cent of marine and coastal areas by 2030.
