Gatineau tramway cost estimate rises to $8 billion
Gatineau light rail project could reach $8B as Quebec rethinks the plan See what changes, costs and funding options could shape the next move.
A Quebec transportation agency says the planned 24kilometre Gatineau light rail project could cost about $8 billion, roughly four times the original 2018 estimate.
Mobilité Infra Québec, which took over planning in February, said it has reviewed the project’s costs and compared it with other Canadian transit builds. The agency now says it may be better to start with a smaller first phase and expand the line later in two or three stages.
Officials are also considering changes to the route and funding model. The first phase could link Gatineau’s Plateau district with Ottawa, and private investment may be needed alongside government funding. The agency expects to make a final recommendation by Nov. 30.
