Musk texted OpenAI’s Brockman about settlement before trial

Elon Musk trial text exposes late settlement push before OpenAI court battle See why the message could shape the case as Brockman and Altman face testimony

Elon Musk reached out to OpenAI president Greg Brockman by text two days before his lawsuit against the company was set to go to trial, according to a filing made public late Sunday. The filing says Musk asked about a possible settlement, and when Brockman suggested both sides drop their claims, Musk replied that by the end of the week Brockman and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman would be widely disliked if they did not agree. Musk, who helped found OpenAI in 2015, sued the company, Brockman and Altman in 2024. He has argued that OpenAI drifted from its nonprofit mission and improperly shifted toward commercial goals. The trial began last week in federal court in Oakland, California. Musk testified during the first week, and Brockman may take the stand as soon as Monday. OpenAI’s lawyers say the text message could help show Musk’s motive in bringing the case.
