B.C. program offers doorbell cameras to domestic abuse survivors

Free doorbell cameras in B.C. help domestic abuse survivors feel safer at home. Doorway to Safety adds video evidence and support—see how the program works.

A new program in British Columbia is providing free doorbell cameras to people who have experienced domestic abuse. The Doorway to Safety initiative, led by the B.C. Society of Transition Houses in partnership with Tech Safe B.C., will distribute 3,000 Ring devices across the province. The cameras, donated by Amazon Canada, come with a lifetime subscription that includes video recording and other safety features. Organizers say the devices are meant to be part of a broader safety plan, and frontline workers will help recipients choose the right option and learn how to use it safely. Advocates say the technology may help survivors feel more secure at home and could provide useful evidence in court, but they also warn about privacy risks if footage or data is accessed by third parties or abusers.
