Trade war shapes Quebec election campaign
Quebec trade dispute shapes election as leaders pitch tariff responses to protect jobs See how parties plan to defend businesses and win voter support as tensions rise
The CanadaU.S. trade dispute is becoming a major issue in Quebec’s provincial election, with party leaders setting out different approaches to protect jobs and businesses affected by tariffs.
On Tuesday, the issue gained more attention after federal countertariffs on the United States drew responses from leaders across the province. Coalition Avenir Québec Leader Christine Fréchette said Quebec should support local products and adjust public procurement rules so some U.S. companies cannot bid on provincial contracts.
Liberal Leader Charles Milliard said the CAQ’s plan does not go far enough, while Parti Québécois Leader Paul StPierre Plamondon argued his party is better prepared to defend Quebec’s economic interests. Business groups have backed Ottawa’s decision to respond to U.S. tariffs, but say the dispute is creating uncertainty for companies. The trade issue is expected to stay central as debates continue in the coming days.
