FIFA reverses World Cup water bottle ban with limits
FIFA World Cup 2026 bottle policy now allows one sealed soft plastic bottle See what stadiums permit and where the rule still differs across North America
FIFA has reversed part of its earlier water bottle ban for World Cup matches, allowing fans to bring one factorysealed soft plastic bottle into stadiums in the United States and Canada.
The update, announced by FIFA World Cup 2026 Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi, still prohibits hardsided reusable bottles because of safety and security concerns. It remains unclear whether the same rule change applies to matches in Mexico.
The policy changed after FIFA had recently said reusable plastic bottles would be allowed, then later backtracked and said fans would need to buy bottled water inside venues. The tournament begins this month and will be played at 16 venues across North America, including Toronto and Vancouver.
