Quebec proposes ban on energy drink sales to teens under 16

Quebec’s health minister has introduced legislation that would ban the sale of energy drinks to people under 16, including purchases made online and through vending machines. The bill also includes a $100 fine for minors who violate the rules. Health Minister Sonia Bélanger said the risks linked to energy drinks are often underestimated and described the issue as a public health concern. The proposal follows renewed calls for action after the death of 15yearold Zachary Miron in 2024, whose family says the legislation is the right response. The bill still faces uncertainty in the legislature, where the lone Conservative MNA has said she does not want the debate rushed. Other parties, along with parents, teachers, schools and public health groups, have expressed support for tighter restrictions.
