Dozens of hikers on Vancouver Island’s West Coast Trail were evacuated after heavy rainfall made parts of the 75kilometre route unsafe to use.
Parks Canada said sections of the trail are currently impassable and warned people not to cross creeks or rivers on foot. The agency said its visitor safety team is handling a large number of evacuation requests.
The owners of the Crab Shack, a floating restaurant near the midpoint of the trail, said the conditions are unusually severe for July. Parks Canada also said visitors with reservations through Aug. 1 can receive a full refund.
