Senate prepares votes on crypto and college sports bills
Crypto regulation bill heads to Senate: clearer SEC and CFTC rules for digital assets College sports reform and September votes could reshape both debates before midterms
The Senate is set to begin a short fall session with two major bills on the agenda: one to create federal rules for cryptocurrency and another to regulate college athletics. Lawmakers return to Washington after the August recess, with votes expected in September as the chamber races against the calendar before the midterms.
The crypto measure would split oversight between the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and establish a clearer framework for digital assets. Supporters say the bill could give companies more certainty, while Democrats are raising concerns about ethics provisions and possible benefits for President Trump and his family.
A separate proposal focused on college sports is also moving forward. Backed by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, the bill would limit transfers, cap some NILrelated spending, and block athletes from leaving school for the pros and then returning. Supporters say the changes would bring stability to college athletics, but the measure still faces an uncertain path in the House before lawmakers leave Washington.
