OpenAI outlines safety case framework for frontier AI training

OpenAI safety cases for frontier AI reinforcement learning runs See the safeguards, approvals, and incident steps shaping safer training

OpenAI has published guidance on how it thinks safety cases should be built for frontier AI reinforcement learning runs. The company says the goal is to create structured, evidencebased documentation before training continues, with a focus on reducing misalignment risks and improving oversight. The document lays out three main areas of emphasis: technical safeguards, operational guidelines, and incident investigations. Technical measures include alignment training, containment, and monitoring, such as reviewing training environments for reward hacks, strengthening sandbox security, limiting side channels, and setting thresholds for alerts that can pause a run if needed. OpenAI also recommends operational practices like internal dissent reviews, leadership approvals, accountability for senior leaders, audit access, escalation paths, and rollback planning. For severe misalignment incidents, it suggests rootcause analysis, postmortems, public disclosure after investigations conclude, and notifications to affected third parties.
