Toronto police say they have seized what they describe as the largest haul of counterfeit soccer jerseys in Canadian history. The investigation led to two arrests and more than $3.5 million in fake merchandise recovered from a warehouse in Mississauga.
Police said they received a tip about a warehouse storing counterfeit jerseys, flags and World Cup trophies on May 12. Officers later executed four search warrants on May 26 and allege the items were being distributed to retail stores.
Investigators said the case reflects a wider problem that often grows around major sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup. Police are asking anyone who believes they bought a counterfeit jersey to contact authorities.
