India says U.S. trade talks have stalled
India US trade talks stall as tariff and deficit disputes persist See why a quick deal looks unlikely as both sides weigh tougher terms
India’s finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said trade negotiations with the United States have reached a plateau, signaling that a deal may be difficult to finalize soon.
Speaking in New Delhi on Monday, Sitharaman said both sides are still talking, but there is limited room for further compromise if reducing the trade imbalance remains the main goal. U.S. trade officials have also recently said an agreement is not imminent.
The comments come after months of talks between Washington and New Delhi over tariffs, market access, energy, defense, and critical technologies. The United States recorded a $58.42 billion goods trade deficit with India in 2025, and officials in both countries have signaled that they want to narrow the gap.
