Residents and pilots debate noise at Qualicum Beach Airport

Tensions have grown around Qualicum Beach Airport on midVancouver Island after false social media posts suggested it might close. The Town of Qualicum Beach said there was no plan to shut the airport, even as many residents and aviation users gathered at a council meeting to air concerns. Residents said lowflying aircraft, especially training flights, are affecting the quiet character of the seaside community. Pilots and flying club members argued the airport is an important local resource that supports flight training, private aviation and some commercial service. Mayor Teunis Westbroek said the town is working on a business plan and looking at possible changes, including more noisesensitive areas and limits on circuit training. The airport already has community guidelines, but officials say they are trying to balance quality of life for nearby residents with access to the facility.
