Meta settlement may open path for new AI launches, analysts say
Meta settlement eases legal overhang as Morgan Stanley eyes faster AI launches Investors may gain room for new products, though execution risks still loom
Meta’s $18 billion settlement in a social media lawsuit may remove a legal overhang and give the company more room to roll out new AI products, according to Morgan Stanley.
The case stemmed from allegations by 29 U.S. state attorneys general that Instagram and Facebook had design features that could harm younger users. Meta reached a settlement in August and agreed to changes for users under 18, including tighter age checks and limits on some features.
Morgan Stanley said large legal disputes have sometimes been followed by a stronger pace of product launches at major tech companies. The bank cited Meta’s pipeline of AI tools, ad products, subscription offerings, APIs and smart glasses, while noting that none of the products are guaranteed to be ready for launch. Needham, meanwhile, kept a hold rating and warned that Meta’s spending and broad strategy could make it harder for the company to succeed across so many areas.
