TSB Finds Structural Problems on CN Rail Tracks Near Repentigny Derailment

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says it found several track deficiencies near the site of a derailment in Repentigny, Que., northeast of Montreal. Investigators examined the railway after 49 wagons derailed on July 5 beside a residential area. In a letter sent to Transport Canada on July 10, the agency said it reviewed the derailment site and eight other sections of track. The safety board said some rail anchors were missing or displaced, several ties were skewed, and there were signs of friction from spikes against the ties. It also said the rails had shifted by nearly nine centimetres in some places, which could have affected train stability and raised the risk of derailment.
