OpenAI report says AI is expanding tasks across jobs

OpenAI has published a report based on more than 800,000 ChatGPT messages from U.S. users that examines how AI is changing work patterns. The analysis suggests that many workrelated prompts involve tasks usually associated with other occupations, indicating that AI is helping people take on work beyond their traditional roles. The report highlights what it calls “task crossover,” where users in one profession ask AI to help with work more commonly linked to another. Examples include smallbusiness owners drafting contracts or doing basic financial analysis, sales teams exploring customer data, and marketers troubleshooting websites without a developer. OpenAI says this may signal that jobs are being reorganized as workers use AI to handle tasks that previously required handoffs. The findings also suggest that crossover is stronger in some fields than others, including customer experience, design, human resources, legal, and marketing. The report says smaller businesses may show more of this pattern because workers there often need to cover multiple functions without access to specialized teams.
