Canada prioritizes five power-line projects for federal support
Power grid intertie projects to boost trade, reliability and lower electricity costs Ottawa backs five upgrades across provinces and Yukon to support growth and clean energy
The federal government says it will prioritize five powerline intertie projects aimed at making it easier for provinces and Yukon to trade electricity across borders. Energy Minister Tim Hodgson announced the plan on Friday in Yellowknife, saying the upgrades could improve reliability, lower costs and support economic growth.
The projects include upgrades to the AlbertaBritish Columbia, AlbertaSaskatchewan and SaskatchewanManitoba connections, as well as expanded links between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick and a new B.C.Yukon grid connection. Ottawa did not attach a new funding amount, but said it will provide financial and regulatory support.
The announcement fits into the federal goal of doubling Canada’s electricity grid by 2050 as demand grows from industry, electric vehicles, heat pumps and artificial intelligence. Some cleanenergy advocates welcomed the move but said the projects are still too small compared with the scale of investment they believe is needed.
