Iran says it destroyed U.S. drone over Hormuz as tensions rise
Iran drone downed over Strait of Hormuz amid U.S. tensions See how the clash, oil risks, and delayed talks could move markets
Iran’s military said it shot down an advanced U.S. drone over the Strait of Hormuz, adding to a series of exchanges between Tehran and Washington as the conflict in the region continues. The Revolutionary Guard said its air defense system intercepted an MQ1 drone, but did not give details about the mission or where the aircraft was operating.
The incident came as President Donald Trump said the U.S. could continue its campaign against Iran and, if it chose, take control of Iranian oil in a deal similar to one reached with Venezuela. He said he expected the war to end later this year, although Iran has previously rejected claims that it is pushing for peace talks.
Separately, planned talks in Oman involving Gulf countries and Iran on possible arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz were postponed. The waterway is a major route for global oil and gas shipments, and the conflict has helped keep energy prices elevated, with Brent and U.S. crude both moving higher on Monday.
