Cargill seeks provincial order to block housing near Sarnia grain terminal

Cargill is asking Ontario’s government to use a Minister’s Zoning Order to stop two housing projects near its grain terminal in Sarnia, creating tension between urban development goals and the needs of a major agricultural operation. The company says homes built too close to the harbour site could interfere with the terminal’s longterm operation, while local officials and some farm groups argue the facility is an important piece of Ontario’s agrifood and export network. The terminal moves a large share of the province’s grain and also receives fertilizer shipments. One proposed project is townhouses on land in nearby Point Edward, and another is a 14storey apartment building on a former restaurant site in Sarnia. The province has not said whether it will grant the request, and no timeline has been announced.
