Thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran on Sunday for the funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several family members killed in a February airstrike during the war between Iran, the United States and Israel.
State television showed three of Khamenei’s sons attending the service and praying beside the coffins, while Mojtaba Khamenei, who is now reported to be the new supreme leader, was not seen publicly. Reuters reported that he was badly injured in the attack, but no image or official appearance has been released.
The funeral is part of a wider stateorganized period of mourning that includes processions and religious ceremonies in Tehran, Qom, Iraq and Mashhad. Iranian officials have framed the events as a display of national unity after the conflict, which ended with a shaky ceasefire and left major political and regional tensions unresolved.
