Tornado watch issued for parts of Alberta as severe storms are forecast for Edmonton

Environment Canada has issued a tornado watch for parts of northern and central Alberta, with the greatest risk expected Tuesday afternoon and early evening. Areas west and north of Edmonton, including Boyle, Drayton Valley, Yellowhead County, Woodlands County, Spruce Grove and Wetaskiwin County, are included in the warning area. An Alberta Emergency Alert says storms that could produce tornadoes may also bring hail as large as baseballs and heavy rain. Officials say Edmonton is under a severe thunderstorm watch, with the main concern being more torrential rain on ground already saturated by recent storms. The watches also note the potential for flash flooding, strong wind gusts, tree damage and harm to buildings or vehicles. Residents are being advised to stay alert as weather conditions develop later Tuesday.
