Cocoa prices ease, but chocolate remains expensive
Cocoa prices ease, but chocolate stays expensive as makers adjust pricing See why costs remain high and how brands are protecting margins
Cocoa prices have fallen from their recent highs, but consumers are still seeing elevated chocolate prices as major makers work through earlier cost pressures and adjust product strategies.
The decline follows a steep rally over the past two years, when poor harvests and weatherrelated supply problems in West Africa pushed cocoa costs to record levels. Cocoa futures are now well below the peak reached at the end of 2024, though they remain above historical norms.
Companies including Lindt, Barry Callebaut and Nestlé have said higher cocoa costs hurt earnings and forced price increases that weighed on demand. Some are now focusing on premium products, social mediadriven launches and influencer marketing to support sales, while also using hedging and selective pricing changes to manage costs.
