Canada’s insurance industry says severe storms and flooding in June caused more than $1.1 billion in insured damage, renewing calls for governments to invest in flood protection.
Preliminary estimates from Catastrophe Indices and Quantification Inc. put losses from storms in Manitoba and Saskatchewan on June 9 and 10 at more than $728 million. Flooding in Montreal and nearby communities on June 20 and 21 added another $409 million in damage.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada said the figures show the growing cost of extreme weather, including tornadoes, hail, strong winds, heavy rain and flash flooding. It is urging officials to limit development in highrisk flood plains, improve stormwater infrastructure, strengthen building codes and expand programs that help homeowners reduce flood damage.
