Prosecutors appeal acquittal of former Mountie in China interference case

Federal prosecutors have appealed the acquittal of former RCMP officer William Majcher, who was found not guilty in British Columbia last month on a charge tied to alleged foreign interference on behalf of China.
The Public Prosecution Service of Canada filed a notice of appeal late last week, asking the B.C. Court of Appeal to overturn the May 13 verdict and order a new trial. The Crown says the trial judge made errors in how the evidence was assessed, including by excluding expert evidence and not fully considering the record.
Majcher, who was arrested in 2023 after returning to Vancouver, has denied wrongdoing and says the case against him lacked merit. His lawyers argue the appeal is not supported by the evidence and that the trial court already examined the facts in detail.
